Self Care and Witchcraft

 Self Care and Witchcraft

Last week when I was researching Oomancy (watching TikTok videos and reading other blog posts on the internet), I noticed being calm was frequently mentioned. In the article, the woman said to be calm and practice mindfulness before starting Oomancy. In some of the TikToks, it was said you needed to be calm to let the power fully talk to you. Witchcraft in the movies we have discussed has the frequent theme of practicing to get what you want. In this world, people often search for calmness with a huge emphasis on self care. I started to wonder if witchcraft can be used as a self care mechanism.

Upon my first Google search, I found an article titled "Creating a Witchy Self-Care Routine." I had no idea what a witchy self care routine contains. According to this article a witchy self care routine contains "elements of divination, energy work, moon watching, spiritual watching, spiritual connection and healing." The article goes onto explain having a witchy self care routine allows her to feel closer to herself.

The article explains that the most witchy element of her routine is moon watching. In class, we have not discussed the moon in relation to witchcraft that much, if at all. To me the moon does correlate with witchcraft because of the darkness etc., but I was interested to see exactly how it has to do with self care. Moon watching has to do with following the four different moon phases, and every morning filling out a moon sheet tailored to that moon phase. Apparently the moon can be seen as a reminder to work with and touch all aspects of life. Throughout my various research for my blogs over the last few weeks, I have seen a common theme of connecting with yourself. Whether that be through Oomancy, or mindful thinking.

The article also explains a practice of her witchy self care routine is divination. An important distinction she mentioned was "receiving guidance from the higher power you believe in." I find this to be fascinating because in my mind divination is working with witchy spirits, but the higher power could also be God, or a higher power from another religion. It's interesting to mix God with a witchy self care routine, to me those are two totally different things, but this article goes to explain that this routine is more of a self connection exercise using whatever you believe in as the base. The rest of the article goes on to explain other practices she does, but she summarizes this routine as something that opens yourself up to the unknown. The development of witchcraft practices is an unparalleled expansion. Witchcraft practices today are completely different than when witchcraft first started.

  1. This is a fascinating blog, thanks. I especially like your last paragraph about appealing to a higher power. I think it all concerns the immense power of belief. Believing is creating. A witchy self-care routine is just as effective as a bottle of Advil or cough syrup as long as we accept its power through belief. Given our world and the frailties of humanity, no matter how it comes to us, self-care is crucial.
